Oni wa soto!

Today (as in February 3rd, today) is Setsubun, which means it’s time to cleanse the evil spirits from my home. Unfortunately, I like my evil spirits, so instead I went around and cleansed some of the other JETs places.

Usually what happens today is that the father of a family puts on an oni (demon) mask and runs around the house while the rest of the family pelts him with peanuts. As I neither have a father here nor an oni mask for them to put on, I sadly had no one to throw peanuts at. But by golly gosh, I sure as hell have peanuts, my school made sure of that!

Me being the concerned soul I am, I went over to Mark’s place, threw peanuts at him, and chanted the chant (oni wa soto = demons, git out!). He was quite relieved that his apartment was purified. Sadly, Chet wasn’t home and Tamla is apparently in Trinidad, but I was able to head over to Adam’s and give his place some purification. That dirty, dirty place needed it. It took my whole bag of peanuts until I felt satisfied with his purity (and by that I mean three).

So, once my duties were finished I went back home, and I still have two bags of peanuts, courtesy of my school. I’m not sure what I should do with them, as I’m certainly not going to eat them.

Oh tell me wise internet, what shall I do with my purification peanuts?

  1. When life gives you peanuts, make peanutade.

  2. Throw them at your bratty students.

  3. It sounds like a plan to me.
