Let’s Gain Some Weight
I’ll post the entry for Day 7 of my bike trip tomorrow, but for now I’ll just say a little bit of what I’m starting.
Before I left for Japan I was 6′0″ and 145 pounds. That by itself is pretty skinny. Over a year later, I don’t really know how much my weight has changed except that I lost much of the muscle tone I used to have. Not doing any weight training whatsoever for well over a year kinda does that to you.
My eyes were suddenly opened when I got back from my cycling trip and had a few of my teachers at school comment on how much skinnier I looked due to the trip. Most people would probably like that statement, but when it’s directed at me, who’s already underweight, it got me concerned. And it got me thinking.
I came to the conclusion that it’s time to commence some weight building/exercise activities. I’m going to set forth my plan here, in a public space so I can have more than just personal goals–I can have public failure! That would be in the case that I fail, which I’m not counting on doing.
The plan is pretty simple.
FOOD
Eat more constant meals.
I’m not going to change what I eat, but I am going to change how much and how often I eat. This means no more skipping breakfast and no more half-assing it for dinner at 1:00 am. If I want to gain weight I obviously need to have a better, more consistent intake of food.
EXERCISE
Everyday: I already bike to work and everywhere I go. Nothing will change.
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: Going to work up to completing 100 consecutive pushp us. I think the most consecutive push ups I’ve ever been able to do was 50. When I did the initial push up test I barely eeked out 40.
Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday: A half hour of yoga. MWF are for strength, TTS are for flexibility and relaxing.
Saturday: 75+ km bike ride. While the actual process of biking is usually fun, sometimes it takes some coaxing to get me out of my comfy chair and go out. I just need to schedule to do it.
So there you have it. I’ve already had a yoga day and two push up days. On Saturday I’m planning on going to the 18th Annual Jozenji Street Jazz Festival, so I’ll be waking up really early on Saturday, biking 75 km to Sendai, enjoying a few hundred musical groups playing in the streets of Sendai, then in the evening biking the 75 km back to Fukushima. Hey, it’ll save me 1,600 yen in bus fares.
