JAPANESE TV CAPTIONING

My god, I’m so stoked right now.

For the past 15 months I’ve been trying off and on to figure out why my TV never displays subtitles for Japanese TV shows even though I’ve permanently set them to ‘on’.

I just happened to go into a menu I’ve never noticed before and saw that the reason I had never seen subtitles is because… they were set to display English! Gah! But now that I switched it to Japanese I can finally see the captioning for the shows. I’m so happy, as it’s much easier to watch and understand Japanese shows when I can read the captioning along with listening.

One downside is that they’re incredibly ugly and oftentimes are in the middle of the screen to accomodate the regular huge random colorful captions they put on the screen for emphasis.

    Success! That’s awesome. My new cellphone does oneseg and can display subtitles. It really is helpful.

    My cell phone displaying captions is what kept on prompting me that shows actually are captioned, else I would have just assumed that captioning simply isn’t done here. I always thought it quite odd that my little phone could display captions yet my TV couldn’t.

    I think the “big colorful texts” you are talking about are called テロップ. Get it right.
