Cycling Japan’s Abandoned Rail: Episode 2 (The Tempoku Line)

By | December 5, 2011

It took longer than expected, but I’ve finally finished up Cycling Japan’s Abandoned Rail: Episode 2 (The Tempoku Line).

If you’re new to CJAR, start off by watching Episode 1: The Haboro Line to get your footing first. Once you’re done with that, head on over to Episode 2:

Awesome. Can’t wait to watch this later today – I’m cleaning out my RSS reader after the end of term and just got to it.

“Oh shit…I think she can hear me!” Haha…y’all are great.

I’m curious about some of your techniques. What program do you use to edit? And how did you animate the maps? Great stuff, and I can’t wait for Eps 3 and 4.

I’m glad you enjoyed it!

I edit everything in Premiere using placeholder titles for the titles/maps, create the maps in After Effects, then import the rendered maps into Premiere.

For the maps in After Effects, the simple explanation is that I’m using 3D layers with keyframed camera movements. For the tracks, I used the pen tool to manually draw the tracks on the map (the opening title sequence took quite some time because of this…). Once you get the lines drawn, you can keyframe the start/end percentages to draw/undraw the progression of the line.

Very cool. I’m still only using Final Cut Express but have heard cool things about Premiere and After Effects. Very impressive work!
