Contest: Win Japanese Shit of Your Choosing
EDIT: The Fukushima requirement has been removed.
Today I figured, what the hell, I’ll run a contest. Some guy I know is running one, and I must say something rubbed off on me. Unfortunately it seemed like some sort of pustule excretion and was kinda disgusting, so I took a shower and scrubbed it off.
So first off, what it’s actually about.
What You Must Do
- Create something using any visual medium (photo, picture, video, etc) that is about, a derivation of, or what you would do with whatever you’d like to win. If you don’t know what you want, just use Pockey.
So I know that it was created for this contest, you must mention Fukushima (the place I live) in some semi-obvious manner.- All entries must be posted in the comments of this original entry.
- You must link back to this contest in your blog. When you enter the contest by commenting on this entry, please provide a link to your linkage. If I’m going to be giving away stuff I might as well get some backlinks for it.
- I will be the sole judge. If I feel that everything is absolutely and amazingly crappy (or if nothing is entered at all) I’m going to declare everyone a loser and will treat my girlfriend and myself to a nice night on the town with the money I would have spent on this.
- Conversely, if the winner goes above and beyond, I may give him/her more shit than promised.
- The deadline for entries is 11:57pm on March 18th (JST). That gives you about two weeks.
Prizes
1st Prize
Anything from Japan under ¥7,000 (about $65 US) that you want, with these exceptions:
- It must cost ¥7,000 or less.
- It can’t be an absurdly obscure thing, even in Japan. In other words, I must be able to go to the relevant brick-and-mortar store and easily purchase it.
- It must be of a reasonable size to ship for a reasonable amount of money.
- You may apply it to more than one item, but keep it to a reasonable number of things
- If I deem your request to break any of these rules, I reserve the right to say fuck it and buy you whatever I want. Whatever I end up getting you will still be worth close to ¥7,000.
- You may also request me to send you whatever I want, in which case I’ll buy you whatever I want. I’ll surprise you.
2nd - 5th Prizes
Something of my choosing that will be relatively cheap. It’ll be Japan-related in some way.
So then, go out… be free… create!

Added on March 8th, 2008 at 11:22 amThis is an art project for the legendary anime film “Akira” that I did some time back, but I still really like it. We had to pick a film cell and paint a scene using multilayering. There is a glossy sheet (Kaneda and his cycle) on top of the backdrop (graffiti wall).
My art skills have improved considerably since this piece, but I really like it. I started working on it the day after I saw “Akira,” which was the first anime flick I ever saw, so it’s symbolic to my start with anime.
If you were to choose me for any sort of a prize, I guess anything associated with the typical otaku/gamer obsession would be cool. Capsules, anime, manga, video game stuff, plushes, etc. would be really neat, but it’s entirely up to you.
Maybe even a Japanese newspaper? I’m big into journalism, and I’ve always wanted to see what a Japanese newspaper looks like in detail because the language is so different.
Thanks!

Added on March 17th, 2008 at 12:17 pmI guess I misunderstood/didn’t read the rules clearly. Alex just told me about it.
Anyway, no, I did not create that - I thought you just wanted a picture related to what we wanted. Thanks anyway.

Added on June 12th, 2008 at 11:58 amHey man, I’m not sure if I ever got back to you or not, but thanks a bunch for everything! I did write a blog entry on my MySpace about the whole thing, and most of my readers were very thankful for your generosity, and of course, the wacky things from Japan.
Thanks again. If you want a link to the specific entry, let me know. =]
